KERCHACHE (Jacques) — Africa, Oceania, America - Lot 178
KERCHACHE (Jacques) — Africa, Oceania, America Paris, Galerie Jacques Kerchache, 1969. In-4, approximately 27 cm, paperback, illustrated with photographs on the cover. 42 pages, lavishly illustrated with black-and-white photographs by Luc Joubert, some of which are full-page or double-page spreads. Catalog of the 7th exhibition at the Galerie Jacques Kerchache, printed at the Imprimerie Boudin, legal deposit 2nd quarter of 1969. A rare catalog devoted to the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, published by Jacques Kerchache at the beginning of his career as a dealer and expert in primitive arts. The works are reproduced along with their place of origin and dimensions: Fang from Gabon, Batéké from the Congo, Chamba and Bamiléké from Cameroon, etc. This catalog is particularly interesting today for its documentary value: several works reproduced in this exhibition have become pieces of significant provenance on the art market. The large statue reproduced in your copy as “Chamba, Nigeria, 133 cm” is now identified as a Mumuyé statue and is explicitly referenced in modern auction catalogs as published by Kerchache in 1969, pp. 28–29. The Fang mask featured on the exhibition cover is also documented by Sotheby’s as having been exhibited at Kerchache in 1969 and reproduced on the catalog cover. Condition: good copy. Cover slightly yellowed and soiled, with a few small marks, creases, and normal wear; interior clean and well-preserved.
