[MESOPOTAMIA - IRAQ]. — TREASURES OF THE BAGHDAD MUSEUM: FRO - Lot 19
[MESOPOTAMIA - IRAQ]. — TREASURES OF THE BAGHDAD MUSEUM: FROM PREHISTORY TO ISLAM. Paris, Ministry of Cultural Affairs - Réunion des Musées Nationaux, 1966. In-8, paperback, cover illustrated with a large black-and-white photograph, 129 pp., numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions in and outside the text; a fold-out map is noted in the bibliographic collation. First edition of the catalog Catalog of the major exhibition held at the Louvre Museum, Galerie Mollien, from January 28 to March 28, 1966, dedicated to the collections of the Baghdad Museum and the artistic history of Mesopotamia, from the earliest civilizations to the Islamic period. The BnF correctly lists the 1966 Paris edition and notes a preface by André Parrot. Extensive archaeological documentation illustrating, in particular, the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Parthian civilizations, as well as later periods leading up to Islam. The catalog features reproductions of sculptures, reliefs, terracotta pieces, ceramics, and objects from Iraqi collections. The documentary significance of this catalog remains substantial: certain works featured in it are still referenced today in the Louvre’s scholarly catalog with an explicit reference to the 1966 exhibition. A good copy overall. The cover is intact, showing scuffing, scratches, and signs of wear, with wear on the edges and corners. A few small marks and creases are visible. The interior appears clean and well-preserved. The front cover, which is entirely photographic, is particularly striking and gives this catalog a much more appealing look than many institutional archaeological publications from that period.
