DACIER (Bon-Joseph). - Lot 86
DACIER (Bon-Joseph). Born in Valognes in 1742—died in 1833. Man of letters, permanent secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, member of the Académie française. Autograph letter signed “Dacier,” addressed to Monsieur Renouard. Paris and Louvres, December 30, 1824. 2/3 of an in-8 page on letterhead printed “Bibliothèque du Roi” bearing the coat of arms An interesting letter concerning the consultation and reproduction of a document held at the Royal Library. Dacier responds to a request from the publisher Antoine-Auguste Renouard, who wished to obtain a copy of a letter from Queen Christine. He states that he has forwarded the request to Abbé Lespine, then administrator of the Library, and emphasizes the significance of the document: “…I am convinced that a connoisseur as discerning as you, who appreciates the value of such a precious object, will not neglect any of the necessary precautions to keep it intact…” The document illustrates the practices governing access to public collections in the early 19th century, encompassing administrative authorizations, concerns for preservation, and the circulation of scholarly sources. It also bears witness to the relationships between scholars, librarians, and publishers in the world of historical and literary studies. Autograph signature.
