FRIEDLANDER (Lee). - Lot 110
FRIEDLANDER (Lee). Maria. Photographs by Lee Friedlander. Washington & London, Smithsonian Institution Press / Constance Sullivan Editions, 1992. In-4 (approx. 28 × 22 cm), illustrated hardcover by the publisher. 96 pp. Fully illustrated with black-and-white photographs. First edition of this book published in the Photographers at Work—A Smithsonian Series, dedicated to the great American photographers. It brings together portraits taken by Lee Friedlander of his wife Maria over more than thirty years, beginning in the early 1960s. Far from being a mere family album, this collection constitutes one of the photographer’s most personal works, where intimate portraiture merges with a reflection on time, domestic life, and photography itself. The images, characterized by great formal simplicity, depict Maria in everyday settings, revealing the consistency of Friedlander’s vision and the evolution of his photographic style. The book is now considered an important part of his body of work. Condition: good copy. The hardcover is slightly soiled and shows a few minor signs of wear, none of which are serious. The interior is in very good condition, with no annotations or defects.
