Large quarto, paperback, illustrated photographic cover. First edition of one of the most beautiful works devoted to French speleology, bringing together the writings of the great explorer Norbert Casteret (1897–1987) and the remarkable photographs of Germain Gattet. The book is illustrated with 54 full-page heliogravures depicting major French caves (Esparros, Gargas, Padirac, Dargilan, etc.), stalactites, concretions, underground rivers, and speleological explorations. At a time when underground photography was still a technical feat, these images played a major role in introducing the general public to the beauty of the subterranean world. Published by B. Arthaud, a leading publisher of books on mountaineering and exploration, this volume is one of the classics of French speleological literature. Condition: copy in fair condition. Cover shows scuffing, minor wear, and soiling; spine slightly worn; paper uniformly yellowed; old owner’s stamp on the half-title page (“O. Rousselle, Justice of the Peace, Roisel (Somme)”). Interior clean and complete with all 54 photogravures.
