SIMPSON (Sir James Young). - Lot 270
SIMPSON (Sir James Young). Born in Bathgate (Scotland), 1811 - died in Edinburgh, 1870. Scottish surgeon and obstetrician. A major figure in the history of medicine, he introduced the use of chloroform in obstetrics in 1847, revolutionizing the practice of childbirth. Autograph letter signed "J. Y. Simpson", addressed to a correspondent. Edinburgh, n.d. 3/4 page in-8. In English. Short bill of a medical and professional nature, concerning the organization of a meeting between practitioners. Simpson refers to the arrival of several colleagues ("Dr. Kood", "Sir Pender") and mentions prior exchanges with Dr. Candlish. Although succinct, this letter illustrates 19th-century British medical networks and the day-to-day activities of one of the great innovators of modern obstetrics.
