ROCHEFORT, Henri de - Lot 257
ROCHEFORT, Henri de (Paris, 1831 - Aix-les-Bains, 1913) Journalist and politician, opposition figure to the Second Empire. Autograph letter signed "Cte de Rochefort", addressed to a Libourne notary. Paris, August 11, 1856. 2 ½ pages in-8. Presence of suscription, stamp and postmarks. Interesting letter relating to a contentious matter tinged with suspicion, concerning the lease of a family property, "la terre de la Roque". Rochefort expresses his astonishment at the receipt, by bailiff, of a deed announcing the termination of the lease, which he considers to be based on a "false assumption of person". Suspecting mystification, or even an anonymous letter, he mentions the name of Mr. Recapet and asks his notary to carry out thorough checks to establish the reality or fraud of the deed served. This correspondence, which predates his full journalistic fame, sheds light on a more private aspect of Rochefort's life, still far removed from the great political polemics that would make him famous under the Second Empire and then the Third Republic. Nevertheless, it bears witness to his already distrustful and combative temperament in the face of what he perceived as abusive maneuvers. An interesting document, combining heritage concerns and a climate of suspicion, in a direct, assertive style.
