PICARD, Alfred - Lot 221
PICARD, Alfred (Strasbourg, 1844 - Paris, 1913) Engineer and administrator, vice-president of the Conseil d'État, a major figure in the organization of Universal Exhibitions and technical institutions. Autograph letter signed "A. Picard", addressed to a colleague. Paris, February 9, 1905. 1 ½ page in-12. Letter concerning an invitation, which Picard accepts courteously, while expressing a reservation linked to his professional obligations. He states: "Allow me, however, to reserve the case where, as I fear, the International Commission of Railway Congresses, of which I am vice-president, meets in Brussels on the 25th...", testifying to his involvement in international bodies linked to railway development. This brief but revealing bill illustrates Picard's central role in the technical and administrative networks of the Third Republic, as well as the importance of international exchanges in the field of infrastructure and transport at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. Characteristic document of the professional correspondence of a leading civil servant and engineer.
