PÉTION, Alexandre (1770-1818) - Lot 215
PÉTION, Alexandre (1770-1818) President of the Republic of Haiti from 1807 to 1818, a major figure in Haitian independence. Letter signed "Pétion" with attached supporting statement, Port-au-Prince, August 15, 1814. Set of two folios on laid paper, under the printed letterhead of the Republic of Haiti, with large engraved national emblem at the head, dated: "au Port-au-Prince le 15 août 1814" "Year 11 of Independence". Very interesting administrative and military document addressed to the Treasurer General, in which Alexandre Pétion orders the payment of : one hundred and eighty-five gourdes to be taken from the military fund. The sum is to be remitted to : Captain Morito of the messenger guard to be taken to the : General Bozetes in Jérémie The highly readable text sheds light on the financial and military circuits of the young Haitian Republic, in particular relations between Port-au-Prince and Jérémie, the strategic center of the southwest. Large, handsome autograph signature of Alexandre Pétion at the bottom of the letter. The handwritten address on the reverse, which has been preserved, is a precious element of provenance and authenticity. The set is accompanied by its original handwritten supporting statement, listing the officers by name and the sums to be paid, with details of the amounts, for a certified total of : 185 gourdes This particularly rare appendix considerably enhances the historical interest of the item by documenting the actual breakdown of funds. Preservation in keeping with the nature of the document: marginal wear, minor edge loss and traces of old folds, with no major damage to the text or signature. A very fine set of documents on the military administration of the Pétion regime.
