LEVASSEUR (Pierre-Émile) - Lot 158
LEVASSEUR (Pierre-Émile) (Paris, 1828 - 1911) Historian and economist, professor at the Collège de France, member of the Institut, specialist in economic and social history. Autograph letter signed, addressed to "Mon cher collègue". S.l. [Paris], November 28, 1861. 1 page in-8. Enclosed: printed document from the Société de Géographie de Paris. Scholarly correspondence and academic network relations Interesting letter from Pierre-Émile Levasseur, a major figure in 19th-century French economic history, describing his relations within Parisian scholarly and scientific circles. In this letter, Levasseur asks his correspondent to kindly remind him of the address of Mme Cornu, whom he describes as "an amiable person, who has spirit and a liberal mind", so that he can pay her his respects. He also thanks his correspondent for sending him the October bulletin, in which he notes that he has found "the curious account of Jean le Bel". Enclosure Enclosed is a printed document from the Société de Géographie de Paris, announcing the death of its president, M. Quatrefages de Bréau, and a subsequent letter of thanks. This set of documents gives the letter an interesting institutional context, illustrating exchanges within learned societies and the workings of scientific networks in the second half of the 19th century.
