LANGLOIS (Victor) - Lot 139
LANGLOIS (Victor) Born in Dieppe in 1829 - died in 1869. Orientalist, numismatist and scholar, specialist in Armenian studies. Autograph letter signed "Victor Langlois", addressed to "Monsieur" [Dieppe librarian]. Paris, 25 boulevard du Temple, September 1, 1860. 2 pages in-4. Beautiful, lengthy letter concerning donations of works to the library in Dieppe, the author's native town, to which he remains deeply attached. In it, Langlois announces the dispatch of several autograph volumes, as well as other publications he would like to see added to the local collections: "I am fulfilling my promise... I am also taking the liberty of sending you some of the books I have written for the library". In a passage that is particularly revealing of his attachment to his home town, he expresses his desire to contribute to the intellectual development of his fellow citizens, evoking with emotion his possible return after long years of absence. He also mentions his scholarly contacts and works in progress, as well as his links with various institutions and learned societies. The letter is an interesting testimony to 19th-century intellectual networks and the role of scholars in enriching provincial libraries, between personal donations, administrative relationships and scholarly exchanges. Clear autograph signature.
