GARNIER (Jules) Saint-Étienne, 1839 - 1904 French engineer, historian and ethnologist, famous for his work in New Caledonia and the discovery of garnierite, the nickel ore that bears his name. Autograph letter signed "Jules Garnier" to "Chère Madame". Paris, December 22, 1881 1 page ¼ in-8. Charming letter of convenience in which Jules Garnier warmly thanks his correspondent while apologizing for being unable to visit her father the next day: "...quite impossible to go and see Monsieur votre père tomorrow, Friday...". He nevertheless promises to go "without fail next Monday", demonstrating his attentive politeness and marked sense of social commitment. This letter is part of Garnier's period of maturity, when he was recognized both for his scientific work and for his activity within the Société de Géographie de Paris, of which he became secretary. Hired in 1863 as head of the Mining Department in New Caledonia, he discovered garnierite and contributed to the boom in nickel mining, paving the way for international recognition of the properties of ferronickel at the end of the XIXᵉ century.
