DUPANLOUP (Félix) - Lot 74
DUPANLOUP (Félix) DUPANLOUP, Félix (Saint-Félix, 1802 - Paris, 1878) Bishop of Orléans, orator and politician. Autograph letter signed "+ Félix, Évêque d'Orléans", addressed to a Minister. Versailles (printed letterhead of the Bishopric of Orléans), March 7, 1872. 1 page in-8, on blue paper. Beautiful official letter, in elegant, perfectly legible handwriting, with printed letterhead "Évêché d'Orléans", concerning the work of a commission charged with examining a bill on primary education. Dupanloup informs his correspondent that "the commission charged with examining the bill on primary education has not completed its work", while expressing the wish to be heard on several important points that were the subject of its deliberations. He specified the usual meeting days - "Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, at noon" - and invited the Minister to indicate a suitable date for a hearing. The letter is set against the backdrop of the great debates on the question of education in the early days of the IIIᵉ République, in which Dupanloup, a major figure in liberal Catholicism, played an active role. An ardent defender of freedom of education, he had distinguished himself as early as the Falloux law of 1850 and continued to weigh in on legislative discussions relating to public education. A characteristic piece of his political and religious commitment, testifying to his direct involvement in the development of educational policies.
