CAMEROON - Lot 34
CAMEROON [CAMEROUN]. Former German colony from 1884, placed under French administration after World War I. Important set of printed and typed documents relating to Douala and Cameroon (early 20th century). Set comprises 7 items, large folio and folio, including maps, administrative notices and sanitary documents. Very rare and remarkable set of documents relating to the urban, sanitary and colonial history of Cameroon, focusing mainly on Douala. The set includes original German plan of the new indigenous quarters of the city of Douala, entitled Genereller Entwurf für die Neuanlagen der Eingeborenen-Stadt von Duala, attached to photographic reproduction; annotated plan of the city of Douala, with red lines indicating "Anopheles", working document for urban sanitation; general map of Cameroon, enhanced with colors; bilingual health notice to the inhabitants of Douala, in French and the local language, dated November 23, 1916, signed by Lucien Fourneau, Commissioner of the French Republic in Cameroon, concerning the fight against malaria and mosquito-borne diseases; typewritten scientific document in German, from the Victoria laboratory, concerning the analysis of water intended for consumption; photographic print of the German plan. Of great interest for the history of German and then French colonization, colonial town planning, tropical medical history and the cartography of Central Africa. The German plan of Douala is particularly remarkable: it documents the differentiated spatial structuring of the colonial city, distinguishing between European quarters, indigenous quarters and planned development zones. The 1916 sanitary notice is a rare record of the first public hygiene campaigns carried out by the French administration in Cameroon after it took control of the territory.
