CAMBON (Jules) - Lot 32
CAMBON (Jules) Born in Paris, 1845 - died in 1935. Administrator and diplomat, French ambassador to Washington and then Berlin, a key figure in late 19th-century French diplomacy. Autograph letter signed "Jules Cambon", addressed to "mon cher Docteur" [Docteur Cazalis]. Paris, November 16, 1901. 2 pages in-8. A visiting card is enclosed. Interesting letter in which Cambon, then ambassador to Washington, refers to the rediscovery of mislaid documents likely to be of interest to his correspondent: "I'm leaving for New-York and while tidying up my papers, I find these which had gone astray...". He sends back "duly apostilled" a previously addressed note, testifying to his attentive follow-up of personal or administrative files. The letter concludes on a more personal and warm note, with Cambon expressing his best wishes in advance: "Allow me to hope that when we meet again we will have more reason to be cheerful than we did this time... and to send you my best wishes for a happy new year...". This document elegantly blends practical matters and friendly sentiments, illustrating the ties between diplomats and their correspondents and the epistolary customs of the Belle Époque. Jules Cambon was appointed French ambassador to Washington in 1897, where he played a decisive role in the peace negotiations between Spain and the United States, helping to draw up the Treaties of Paris in 1898.
