CAMBON (Jules) - Lot 31
CAMBON (Jules) Born in Paris, 1845 - died in 1935. Administrator and diplomat, French ambassador to Washington and then Berlin, a major figure in French diplomacy at the end of the 19th century. Autograph letter signed "Jules Cambon", addressed to Dr. Cazalis. Madrid, December 1, 1903. 3 pages in-8. Embossed mourning paper on behalf of the French Embassy in Spain. An important letter of mourning in which Cambon thanks his correspondent for his condolences, expressing with great sobriety the depth of his grief: "The share you are taking in the misfortune that has befallen me is very sensitive to me... at such a time if nothing can console, it is still a support to feel friendships and sympathies around you...". He recalls with emotion the loss of his mother, "the best and only witness to our life who is gone", underlining the immense void left for him and his brother. This intimate and particularly touching document sheds light on the personal dimension of a great diplomat stationed in Madrid, and bears witness to the epistolary practices of mourning in high administrative circles at the turn of the 20th century.
