CAMBON (Jules) - Lot 30
CAMBON (Jules) Born in Paris, 1845 - died in 1935. Administrator and diplomat, French ambassador to Washington and then Berlin, a key figure in French diplomacy at the end of the 19th century. Autograph letter signed "Jules Cambon", addressed to Monsieur Deligne. [S.l., s.d.]. 2 pages in-8. Interesting letter concerning an intervention with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Cambon writes that he has just "written to Foreign Affairs to put forward the candidacy of Mlle Bailleux", who is to be presented "to M. Leygues by the Quai d'Orsay". However, he expresses some reservations about the outcome of his approach: "I hope to succeed, but you know that I am not always listened to...". This document sheds light on the mechanisms of recommendation and networks of influence within the French diplomatic administration, testifying to the intermediary role that senior officials could play in careers and appointments. Jules Cambon was appointed French ambassador to Washington in 1897, where he played a decisive role in the peace negotiations between Spain and the United States, helping to draw up the Treaties of Paris in 1898.
