CAMBON (Jules) - Lot 29
CAMBON (Jules) Born in Paris, 1845 - died in 1935. Administrator and diplomat, French ambassador to Washington and then Berlin, a major figure in French diplomacy at the end of the 19th century. Autograph letter signed "Jules Cambon", addressed to the singer Maria Freund. [S.l.], [June 2, n.d.]. 1 ½ page in-12. Mourning paper. Letter of thanks for condolences received: "I send you all my thanks for your kind sympathies. In these sad moments, it is a great comfort to feel the affection of one's friends around one...". This bill, imbued with sober dignity, bears witness to the epistolary practices associated with mourning in diplomatic and artistic circles. Jules Cambon was appointed French ambassador to Washington in 1897, where he played a decisive role in the peace negotiations between Spain and the United States, helping to draw up the Treaties of Paris in 1898.
